Give us this day our daily bread

When we pray the Lords’s Prayer (aka The Our Father), we say the words “Give us this day our daily bread”.

I have been saying this prayer since a little girl but never really thought about these few words very much. “Give us this day our daily bread” means that we are asking God to give us what we *need* to face each day. In saying the prayer, we could be asking God for anything:

– food to cure our hunger
– blankets to keep us warm
– grace and knowledge
– a job
– a true love
– a loving father
– a healthy body

Etc etc whatever our intentions are….whatever we need for survival…..(note that there is a distinct difference between what we need and what we want).

When we put our hearts into saying this prayer, God can read our hearts and know what “daily bread” we need in our lives. God knows best for us so sometimes it’s not necessary to spell out to God what we need. We are comforted by the fact that he will take care of us – his children.
